Turmeric + Soap=Indian Sandalwood Soap

Indian Sandalwood Handmade Natural Soap
This Amazing Soap is made with Healthy, Natural Ingredients
blended with extra virgin olive oil, Coconut oil, raw shea butter, activated charcoal and Turmeric for a yummy spicy, sweet, detoxifying scented  bar. True to life sandalwood scent is  woody sweet with a bit of musk underneath. Absolutely a perfect sandalwood Soap!

So Why Turmeric?
Turmeric is a popular ancient spice that is used as a flavoring and coloring agent in food items and as a medicinal herb for treating several disorders
Turmeric has been used in Asian cuisine and medicine for centuries to treat various conditions.

Turmeric is an anti-inflammatory and antibacterial agent. Its anti-inflammatory properties help to reduce redness from blemishes and rosacea, and the antibacterial properties disinfect the skin and combat acne. It also reduces the appearance of dark circles.

It's known for its amazing ability to reduce acne and scarring.

People with oily skin or acne scars who use turmeric on a regular basis can expect a noticeable improvement in the quality of their skin.

Turmeric is an antioxidant that fends off free radicals that cause premature aging, and it can also help to correct an uneven skin tone. Many people who use turmeric skin treatments stop using foundation altogether.
Sounds pretty amazing huh?

There are No preservatives or Fillers in our Soaps.

I definitely had my Soapie MOJO going on when I started this soap. My first thought was, how will I design this soap. I knew exactly the ingredients I was going to use but I wasn't quite sure how to design the soap?  I'm still new to all the different soap techniques so I jumped right in with splashes and swirls of black (activated charcoal) white, Yellow (Turmeric) and a Tan-ish/pink colors...I really had a lot of fun with this soap. The process went along very smoothly and that's great because anything can happen when your making soap. Believe me! I have had some real soap FLOPS! I am happy to say that That this was a fun soap to make and it came out better than I expected  (pat on the back)

The Soapie Frolic's Blackberry Sage Soap

Today was all about Blackberry Sage soap!
I absolutely Love the way This Soap smells, This was my first time making this soap and I guess you can say that I didn't Plan this one out the same way I would the others. I guess its part of the learning curve. I thought about adding some fresh sage to the Top of this soap but it was already to late. I would have preferred the color of the soap to be darker however I'm hoping the next 4-6 weeks of curing time will cause the soap to become slightly darker. I'm happy with the Dead Sea Salt on top but will definitely add Dried Sage or Sage infused oils on the next Batch.

I love the smell of this fragrance oil- This will definitely be a keeper! Let me know what you think!

Oil cleansing? REALLY...

Oil Cleansing?

I was recently doing some reading about facial cleansing. As some of you may know I'm in the trial phase of a new facial cleanser. So, while I love to read and learn about all kinds of new things I was very interested in a blog related to Facial cleansing, truths and myths! I was also intrigued by learning about something called Oil cleansing Method, say WHAT? oil on your face? NO WAY!

I think we have many issues with mainstream skin care products, two reasons stand out the most.  These products strip the natural oil out of our skin, leaving our largest organ trying to repair itself by replacing the oils stripped away. This leaves our skin tight and dry followed by a major oil slick. Each time we strip the oil away, our skin over-compensates for the lack of moisture by creating more oil. On top of the drying effects, these products are highly-scented. Fragrance is one of the top skin irritants and strangely enough, even the so-called "unscented" products usually contain fragrance. See for yourself and check the labels. Dry, irritated skin replaced by oily skin, inflamed and trapping debris?

When cleansing and moisturizing your skin, it is imperative that you keep in mind that oil dissolves oil. Your skin naturally lubricates itself with oil. Many people have this belief that if you add anything oily to your skin that it will clog your pores and make you breakout?

Do not be afraid of applying oil to your face. Oil, alone, will not bring you blemishes. Pimples, cysts, zits, blackheads, whiteheads...these are a result of several different factors including hormones, bacteria, dead skin cells and the buildup of these factors. Your skin naturally produces oil because it needs it. This oil is needed for the benefit of your skin, allowing your largest organ to function properly. It is naturally occurring. Properly functioning skin is beautiful, clear, and glowing.
We all want healthy skin!

Sometimes the reason you have oily skin isn’t because your body is naturally trying to turn itself into an oil slick…it’s because you scrub, cleanse, or strip away your natural oils so much that your skin has gone into overdrive to try and fix the damage.  It can take time for your skin to balance out again, but a gentle, non-comedogenic moisturizer can be a huge help in making your skin less oily.

When cleansing your face with water, keep in mind that hot water is a bad thing and will remove the natural protective oils and other naturally occurring protective barriers in your skin.  Believe it or not, a little oil on your skin is a good thing – even a healthy thing!   Hot water also can cause broken capillaries, especially when combined with harsh scrubbing. Try to wash your face with cool water.

The oil cleansing Method can work with all skin types as well as many types of acne.

Start with dry skin – oil and water don’t mix, so rinsing your face first can interfere with how well the oils work.  In addition, start simple.  Use one type of carrier oil, plain, for at least a week before adding additional carrier oils or essential oils for their benefits.

For Acne prone skin use these Carrier oils:

  • Argan oil
  • Rosehip seed oil
  • Almond oil
  • Grapeseed oil
  • Evening Primrose oil
For Non-acne prone:

  • Soybean oil
  • Avocado oil
  • coconut oil
  • Jojoba oil
  • Apricot Oil
  • Olive oil
  • Castor oil

After you’ve tested the primary carrier oil to be sure your skin responds well to it, you can add a small amount of other essential oils for their benefits as well.  For the acne prone, you can consider adding tea tree oil in a small amount (5 – 10% dilution) to help fight the acne causing bacteria.  Other beneficial oils to include in your cleansing mix are  Cedar wood, Lavender, Cypress, Frankincense spearmint.

Gently Massage your face in small, circular motions, being sure to be gentle and let your fingertips glide over your skin.  Don’t massage for too long, you’ll have to experiment to see what your skin does best with, but start with at least 30 seconds, and try not to massage for longer than a couple minutes. Next, using a clean washcloth with cool water, wipe away the oil. Not Necessary to use Moisturizer if you want. Its like a all-in-one product! TA-DAH!

Be Gentle to your skin, Friends! Your skin shouldn't feel tight or dry. It should be healthy, nourished and Soft.

The Soapie Frolic and Grapeseed oil....

Grapeseed oil and The Soapie Frolic

Grapeseed oil is just one of the ingredients we use in our products.
Grapeseed oil is extracted from the seeds of grapes.
Due to their nutritional and medicinal properties grapes, their seeds, and leaves have been used in many home remedies for centuries. Grape Seed Oil is a great source of polyphenols - flavonoids, Essential Fatty Acid - linoleic acid, vitamin E, and oligomeric proanthocyanidin.
This oil is beneficial for people who have sensitive skin. Grapeseed oil rapidly absorbs into your skin making it a great massage oil, balm, face and body moisturizers, as well as sunblock's and sunburn ointments.

Even many hair care products contain this oil. You can use grape seed oil for hair to promote hair growth, and make it smooth and soft. Due to its antioxidant properties, grape seed oil can delay skin aging by minimizing the damage caused by free radicals.

It has astringent properties and therefore, can tighten the skin. The linoleic acid found in grape seed oil can be very beneficial in skin conditions like, acne, dermatitis and eczema. Linoleic acid can soothe and nourish the skin, and help it to repair. Vitamin E on the other hand, keeps the skin firm and smooth. Grape seed oil is easily absorbed by the body, and it can be used for reducing age spots, sun burn, wrinkles and stretch marks as well.

Sounds Amazing, huh? I can't tell you enough how quickly grapeseed oil does absorb into the skin and its a HEALTHY, NATURAL oil! I have been extremely happy using it in my homemade soaps. I have 3 products that are going through test phases that contain grapeseed oil and I'm super excited! I'm hoping these products will be ready in time for Christmas!

Halloween and the Soapie Fall Collection 2016

I was Recently back in the Soapie Kitchen whipping up another soap for the Fall 2016 Collection.
One of the many reminders of Fall/Halloween is Candy corn. I'm not a fan of this candy however it is one of my memories of Fall and the Halloween holiday.
If you look around at the many decorations for Fall/Halloween there is always something with candy corn in it or part of it. So, I thought this year I would make a Festive Candy corn Soap.

I remember as a kid dressing up for Halloween and going to school and having fun games, a parade and a fun party! All pure Fun! I remember going to the Halloween Family fun night with a spooky haunted house through the all the classrooms and library, costume contest, bozo bucket, tons of games and food provided by the PTA moms! We would trick or Treat for many hours with our pillow cases holding all our yummy candy, even the gross candy that the neighborhood cat lady gave us or the pennies and Nickels we were given. We never worried about being harmed or poisoned. Our parents didn't forbid us or scare us with Halloween being wicked or unholy. It was just about being a kid having fun with friends, siblings, parents, neighborhood kids and being silly with our costumes!
Halloween has to be one of my all time favorite holidays because its the one time of the year that you can get dressed up and look silly, along with everyone else and have fun! Oh and lets not forget about the candy and yummy rice krispy treats Mom makes!

My first Soap in the Fall collection is Harvest Hay ride- Its made with Olive oil, shea butter, Jojoba oil  and coconut oil topped of with Calendula. Once I seen the final un-molding of the soap It reminded me so much of Hay and the colors mimicked Fall colors.

Harvest Hayride, 2016 Fall Soap Collection http://www.thesoapiefrolic.com

Next Fall Soap Made

The 2nd soap in the Fall collection is Green Apple Explosion! Apples are all about Fall and I love green apples such as the
golden Supreme, golden delicious, and blondee's we pick at our local apple orchard every year. These  apples are  a little sour and a little sweet! The best of both worlds! Great for baking apple pie or apple Crisp! LOVE, LOVE, LOVE. I do love the granny smith apple that I can buy at my local grocery store. Its the best for dipping into my homemade caramel sauce. YUMMY! but if I had to choose I would rather pick my own apples! So my inspiration for my green apple explosion soap came from the love of green apples and apple picking in the Fall with my family. Our family tradition is apple picking in the Fall and I hope this will carry on. My grand-daughter loves picking apples and seeing all the pumpkins in the pumpkin patch! My second grand daughter will be born right after thanksgiving this year and I know she will love apples and picking them when she gets  a little older.

This Coming week I will be making my last Fall soap in this Collection but there will be More soaps like our Halloween collection and our X-mas and winter collection!  Stay tuned for Upcoming New products! I have some very cool Halloween bath treats coming soon!

Enjoy your Sunday, friends!

What is TEAR-FREE baby wash & shampoo?

What’s really in baby wash & shampoo?

There are many conventional baby washes that tout themselves on being “all-natural,” tear-free solutions, the ingredients list all kinds of substances I cannot even pronounce. Check out this list of some controversial ingredients you can find in the leading brands:
  • PEG-80, which is potentially toxic to organs
  • Sulfates, which can irritate skin, is potentially toxic to organs and could even lead to endocrine disruption or cancer
  • tetrasodium EDTA, may cause some eye toxicity
  • quaternium-15, may irritate skin allergies
  • orange 4, may potentially be toxic to humans

I'm guilty of buying tear free shampoo's when my children were little. I had no idea that there could be toxic ingredients contained in those products. I guess you can say I was a bit naïve of the products that were on the market in the 90's. As a young mom why would I think that these products could be harmful for my baby? after all why would companies be allowed to sell products that contained toxic ingredients? I assumed everything being sold on store shelves were 100% safe-WRONG!
Now, My children are young adults and I'm so happy that they are conscientious of the products they use.  I'm happy that I started on this adventure of soap making and creating my own natural, healthy skincare products and continuing to research good healthy Ingredients and learn what the unhealthy ingredients are.

So what is it that makes baby soap tear free? If tear-free doesn't contain numbing agents (as urban legend suggest) then why doesn't it sting those sensitive eyes?
Adult and baby shampoos contain Surfactant(short for "surface active agents"). Its really all about the few in chemical formula. Baby shampoos use detergents with long chain surfactants, such as sodium trideceth sulfate or nonionic polymers that are less harsh than normal detergents, and they use only small amounts of these cleansers in their shampoos.

Ditch the sketchy Chemicals!

So, why not think about making your own baby wash or shampoo? or find a local soap maker who makes chemical-free baby soap. I'm going add some simple baby soap DIY that I have found on pinterest.

Moisturizing Baby Wash1/2 Cup Castile Soap (I like Dr Bronner's Baby Mild)
1/2 Cup Water
2 Tbsp Sweet Almond Oil, Jojoba Oil, or Olive Oil
1 Tbsp Vitamin E Oil or Aloe Vera Gel (or just more of the oil used above)
Optional: 8-10 Drops Essential Oil (I like Lavender)
Mix all ingredients in a large glass measuring cup, and pour into a bottle. Give it a shake before each use to make sure ingredients are well mixed, and apply straight to skin or on a wash cloth.

Simple Baby Shampoo

1 Part Dr Bronner's Baby Mild Castile Soap
1 Part Water
Optional: Essential Oil to add scent
Mix ingredients, store in a bottle (I use a squirt bottle), shake before using, massage into scalp, try to avoid eyes (not completely tear proof), and rinse well.  Keep in mind that your child's hair does not need to be shampooed every day.

Conditioner or Clarifying Rinse, if needed

1 Tbsp Apple Cider Vinegar
1 Cup Filtered Water
Mix ingredients, store in an old shampoo bottle, give it a shake before using, pour over hair, let sit for a minute, and then rinse again with water. Vinegar smell will fade as hair dries. Keep out of eyes; NOT tear proof.  I use this rinse every few weeks, as I find that castile soap can sometimes leave a bit of a build up after a while.  If your child has longer hair, you may want to use it every time you wash his or her hair, as it makes for a fantastic detangler.

Baby Lotion

Coconut Oil, Sweet Almond Oil, Jobaba or Olive Oil
Really, you can use any kind of natural oil that has been cleared for skin use.  I prefer Coconut Oil because of its antibacterial properties and it's great smell. Remember, a little goes a long way--use too much and your baby is going to be slick for a little bit!

5 Skincare Types, Do you know yours?

Do you know your skin type? Do you know what type of cleanser you should be using?
I have been doing a lot of research at The Soapie Frolic lately because my future plan for the company is to create a facial cleanser for all skin types. Upon all the reading I find that most people don't really know their skin type or  they are not using the right cleanser for their skin type or just don't know what to use. If your a person with Normal skin you can enjoy just about any cleanser you desire however its best to veer away from ones especially for oily and dry skin. You don't want to throw off your skin's PH balance and cause your face to dry out.

There are so Many Cleanser's on the market and it can be pretty frustrating trying to find the one for your particular skin type. I'm going to list some of the natural ingredients used in facial cleansers for each skin type instead of Individual company products. I believe that Ingredients is key. Things that work for you may not be the case with other Individuals. I also don't settle on just one product however I focus in on those Ingredients.

  • Normal Skin type: Your skin has a even tone, is clear , with fine texture and smooth surface which is neither greasy nor dry. There are no visible pores, blemishes, greasy patches or flaky areas. Cleansing your face 2 times a day is beneficial. Using a Rose water toner with a astringent that contains No alcohol will help keep skin refreshed, pores tight and remove traces of debris. Chamomile, fennel, geranium, lavender, patchouli, rose, sandalwood and lemon are great essential oils that can be used in facial products.

  • Oily Skin type: Oily skin can look course due to enlarged pores and overall dull appearance, but due to the overproduction of oil, skin has a shiny greasy sheen. This skin type has enlarged pores, may contain blackheads, pimples and blemishes. There can be several causes which include abnormal hormone levels, diet, genetics, cosmetics that contain pore blocking ingredients, stress and Humid heat.

  • Dry Skin type: This skin type can appear mildly dry, flaky and slightly tight. Severe dry skin conditions can be itchy and look 'splotchy' in appearance. Dry skin almost has a dull rough complexion, red patches, more visible lines, less elasticity and almost invisible pores. Causes for dry skin can be outdoor exposure to cold, windy conditions causing red chapped skin. Sun in the warmer months take away essential skin moisture while also exposing skin to sun damage. Skin conditions such as contact dermatitis, eczema, psoriasis can cause dry skin. Other causes for dry skin is poor diet, genes, Indoor heating, tanning beds, cosmetics and certain medications.

  • Sensitive Skin type: This skin type can display redness, itchiness, burning and dryness. Sometimes particular skin care products can cause these side effects. Injured or damaged skin can have extreme sensitivity because there is nothing to protect nerve endings.  Allergic reactions and skin conditions can cause facial skin to be sensitive. Exposure to harsh environmental conditons can cause redness, tightness, heat rashes and dryness. As we age skin can become more sensitive.

  • Mature Skin Type: As you age your skin loses both collagen, a protein that keeps skin firm, plump and wrinkle free, and elastin, a protein that gives strength and allows it to stretch. Exposure to free radicals and the sun's UV light can cause further damage to collagen and elastin. Without high concentration of elastin you may notice skin will begin to sag, stretch and tear more easily. As you age skin don't shed quickly and skin may not regenerate new, healthy cells so easily, which can cause skin to appear rough and dull.  Mature skin has a tendency to dry out more , sweat and oil glands tend to deplete with age, depriving the skin of some of its natural moisture.

Be aware of all skincare products your are using! Remember if you cant pronounce the ingredients on the package why would you use it?
The Soapie Frolic has a goal of launching a facial cleanser by the end of the year... Fingers Crossed.
I will be announcing the launch of several new products at a future date.

Please stay Tuned Friends!http://thesoapiefrolic.com

More on Antibacterial Soaps....Ongoing dilemma.

ONGOING DILEMMA?

I recently wrote about the Ingredient Triclosan. This is found in Antibacterial soaps and gels. Today while I was doing some reading I came across a article that I wanted to share.

Crude oil to Petroleum Jelly, SAY WHAT?

So, How many of you use Petroleum Jelly? Maybe you grew up with Mom pulling out the Vaseline for just about everything from cuts to chapped lips to dry skin. My father in Law had the worst  psoriasis I had ever seen and I remember him telling me that many years ago he would use petroleum jelly. Let's face it, many of us have heard all the stories about grandma who applied nothing but Vaseline her whole life and had no wrinkles until the ripe old age of 90. Surely these ingredients must be okay, since they're on the market?

Well, yes and No. I never gave it any thought that petroleum jelly nor mineral oil  could have non-natural origins. I guess I always assumed that everything that is on the market is safe and healthy for you. It wasn't until I started researching and educating myself about natural healthy Ingredients that I really threw myself into creating my own Skincare products.

So what exactly is crude oil? Crude oil is a naturally occurring, Unrefined petroleum product, obtained through oil drilling. Crude oil can be refined to produce usable products such as gasoline, diesel, home heating oil, floor wax, asphalt, ink, Solvents, motor oil, nail polish, hand lotion, candles, shampoo, deodorant, Petroleum jelly and the list goes on.

According to the Environmental workers group (EWG) a whopping 80 percent of all beauty products on the market may be contaminated with with one or more of the 2 dozen reconized cosmetic impurities that are linked to cancer and other health concerns and petroleum and mineral oil  based products are NO exception.
The EWG goes on to say:

"These trace contaminants in petroleum based ingredients often readily penetrate the skin according to government and industry studies, and their presence in products is not restricted by government safety standards-they are legal at any level"

Petroleum is an "occlusive" agent meaning it seals off the skin from air, water or anything else getting in or out. It forms an invisible film on the surface that blocks the pores and the skin's natural respiration process.  Not great for the acne prone Individual. You would be better off putting saran wrap over your body. Not only that, the occlusive nature of petroleum could also create a warm, moist environment for yeast and fungus to grow.

Petroleum Jelly don't allow moisture to be absorbed from the atmosphere, like other emollients can, nor will it allow absorption of other beneficial ingredients that may be in other skin care products you are using. There is nothing in Petroleum jelly that is nourishing.

Let's face it friends, it's a cheap filler material and this is why its in so many beauty products.
Why settle for that when you could use something better?

Instead of petroleum or mineral oil, I recommend coconut oil, olive oil, shea butter, jojoba oil and cocoa butter. These ingredients are ones I use at The soapie Frolic in all my Handmade soaps, body butters, etc. I can personally say that it has made a huge difference with my eczema. 4 out of 5 of my children suffer from eczema and it has helped tremendously switching to natural healthy oils.

So, What is Triclosan?

During all my research on cosmetic Ingredients I came across one ingredient several times over. This ingredient is Tricolsan. So what is Triclosan??

Triclosan is a chemical compound that can prevent the growth of bacteria. It's not just in antibacterial soaps: clothing, furniture, toys, toothpaste, kitchenware and cosmetics also contain triclosan and its chemical cousin, triclocarban. Manufacturers add these ingredients to prevent bacteria from growing in or on their products.Used for its antibacterial benefit.

That sounds like a good thing. I want my soap to get rid of germs.

Everyone does, but triclosan doesn't get rid of germs any better than regular soap. Study after study have found that all soaps are antibacterial, and hands that are washed with regular soap are just as clean and germ-free as hands washed with soap that contains triclosan. In other words, it does nothing to help clean hands.

The FDA has stated that this ingredient is NOT hazardous to humans. On the other hand I have  read some great information from the EWG (environmental workers group) and the resistance that can occur from constant use of tricolsan, in addition to side effects it can cause.

Feel free to read the article from EWG, click the link below.
http://www.ewg.org/research/ewgs-guide-triclosan

There is a lot of controversy surrounding Triclosan. The FDA says that it is not currently known to be  hazardous to humans. This is an ingredient which has been used for 30 years in many products.
Why is this chemical/pesticide ban in Europe? There is a lot of mixed reviews out there.  So, what is the correct information and what does it mean to all us? the consumers? Do we take the word of the FDA and EPA? Why would it be okay to allow companies to use this ingredients in products we pay for with our hard earned money only to be bad for us? Well, I think we need to be more proactive about what we use on our bodies and what we consume into our bodies. I have my opinion on why I try to avoid Triclosan these days. I read labels and yes I question lots of ingredients used in products that are on the market. Only the consumer can choose what they will buy and allow to be used by themselves and their family.

The choice is yours!
